Serenata Singers

The Serenata Singers is an SATB choral group based in The Gap, Brisbane, Australia. We perform various types of music, such as Classical, Broadway, popular, folk, gospel, sacred etc.

The "Serenata Singers" is the name of the choir of the Gap and District Musical Society. This Musical Society was founded in 1970 with a choir membership of 15, and has grown to include an average of 25 - 30 members at present.

We are always looking for new members - particularly tenors, baritones & basses!

If we can get sufficient numbers interested, we would be interested in forming a younger choir (15 - 35 age group).

About Us

The Serenata Singers regularly bring musical entertainment to various Retirement and Nursing Homes throughout Brisbane, as well as taking part in some local community entertainments etc. The program for the year is planned with usually one concert per month, usually on a Sunday afternoon. This year however, we are also doing some performances during weekdays for those who are available.

The choir prides itself on a professional performance, due to the diligence of our accomplished conductor and accompanist. Programs are varied to suit our audiences, with excerpts from musical comedies and operas, sacred songs, folk songs, and Negro spirituals etc. Our rehearsals are in a friendly atmosphere of men and women who just enjoy making music together.

More details are available through the Serenata Singers entry in the Bris-Sing database. Alternatively you can email us directly at: serenatasingers @ hotmail.com (please remove the spam block in the email address).

Funded by the Gambling Community Benefit Fund

In 2006 the Queensland Gambling Community Benefit Fund provided $4,171 to The Gap and District Musical Society for the purchase of a Digital Keyboard, Stand, Stool and PA Sound System plus a selection of printed music.

SERENATA SINGERS

(The Choir of The Gap & District Musical Society)

“Sharing the Joy of Music”

During November residents of The Gap, Ashgrove and Bardon will receive a flyer in their letterboxes as part of the choir’s “Sharing the Joy of Music” project. This is an invitation to residents of our community to become part of this group and enjoy making music together in a friendly welcoming atmosphere.

“This is supported by the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund and Councillor Geraldine Knapp of The Gap Ward”.

In 2010, the choir will celebrate its fortieth anniversary with some special events and singers of all voices, soprano, alto, tenor and bass, are cordially invited to join us and take part.(Tenors are urgently needed- come on men, don't be shy! ) Interested singers from other Brisbane suburbs are always most welcome to join us as well. The assistance of an additional experienced accompanist to join our regular accompanist would be greatly appreciated.

It is now almost 40 years since The Gap & District Musical Society began in 1970 at The Gap with a small group of people getting together around the piano to enjoy singing together with one another. In those days it was called a “sing-song” with such gatherings being the main entertainment of the day. Such events hold many happy memories for the generation of that time.

Shortly afterwards as word got around and more people joined the choir it became well established, with the primary objective being “to enjoy singing together and bringing the joy of music to others”. Today this still remains the objective of the choir. As well, since that beginning, many longstanding friendships have been forged between present and past members; who are all part of a strong community network.

The choir has been conducted for some years now by a qualified Teacher of Voice, Mrs. Michelle Albert and skillfully accompanied by the well-known Mrs. Margaret Crowe. Its standard of performance has risen over these years under their musical expertise and leadership.

During 2009 there have been fourteen performances given Brisbane wide at Retirement Villages, Senior Citizen Centre, Nursing Homes and various community events. Our first public appearance for the year was in March when the choir welcomed a large crowd to the festivities at the Westside Community & Heritage Festival, for the official opening of the Ashgrove Sports Ground redevelopment, with the official guests being representatives of the Federal, State and Local Governments. There were gaily decorated stalls and lots of varied entertainment, plus an excellent display in the Ashgrove Bowls Club of memorabilia from the local Historical Society. It was a successful, happy event which concluded in the evening with a grand fireworks display

The highlight of the year was a public concert held in May in the Auditorium of The Gap Uniting Church where the choir presented a showcase of their music. entitled “At The Movies”. This night was a successful fund-raising event held in conjunction with Ashgrove/The Gap Lions’ Club. It was a night of familiar and fun music from a century of cinema with special guests playing both Classical and Jazz Piano and the renowned Ferny Grove State High School Big Band adding a most enjoyable contrasting flair to the concert, setting toes–a-tapping everywhere.

There are 4 more concerts booked for the choir in 2009. A special event not to be missed will be on 14th December at St Gerrard Magellan Church at Chermside, where each year there is a wonderful display of Christmas lights and numerous festivities over several nights. All are invited. The choir’s last social event for the year will be a Xmas dinner for choir members and friends at the Arana Leagues Club on 7th December.
